Production Technology

In terms of materials, the surface of the Light Operator device is made from PB material, refined through a precise electroplating process, giving it a distinctive silver-gray luster that combines aesthetics with durability. The translucent, flip-top design protects the internal components but also allow users to observe the sorting process, enhancing both interactivity and the device's high-tech appeal. The exterior is neat and elegant, precision-crafted using CNC machining, with discreet screws used ensuring seamless connections. The overall design exudes a modern, high-tech aesthetic, making it ideal for various scientific research laboratories by balancing functionality with premium design quality.

Design Challenge

In-depth exploration of the complex behavioral patterns of laboratory users to design products that meet their needs is a formidable challenge. It requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating expertise from various fields and a deep understanding of user behavior. Creating a delightful user experience involves extensive research and testing to address emotional responses and habitual actions. Coordinating the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including experts from optics, software engineering, and design, adds another layer of complexity. Moreover, balancing between innovation and practicality is essential to ensure that new technologies address real-world problems while also aligning with market demands and expectations.

Project Duration

The project was initiated in Beijing in October 2022, completed in Beijing in September 2024, and released to the market in June 2024.

Operation Flow

Users begin by interacting with an external device to initiate the Light Operator, which prompts the system to perform a self-check to ensure that all sensors and optical components are functioning properly. Next, users log into the system and configure the sorting parameters based on their experimental needs, such as the target cells type and sorting conditions. The user then opens the transparent rotating cover, places the cell sample into the device, and starts the sorting process through the external interface. During the process, users can monitor the real-time status through the translucent cover, while the device automatically records the screening data. Upon completion, the device will automatically stop and notify the user, who can then retrieve the screening results for data analysis. Subsequently, the user can collect the sorted cell samples and perform routine cleaning and maintenance on the device. If required, users can choose to export the sorting data to an external storage device or upload it to a server. Throughout the entire operation, users can clearly view the device's operational status and monitor the time required for each step, ensuring a seamless and transparent process.

Research

The design project, led by Beihang University, aims to enhance cell screening in medical experiments using innovative optoelectronic technologies. By analyzing the behavioral laboratory users’ behavioral habits through video recordings and interviews, we have developed outstanding high-precision laboratory research equipment. This study integrates optical and electrical technologies with ergonomic design, providing users with a delightful experimental experience. Extensive user research and parameter adjustments of core components have transformed complex experimental procedures into a smooth and vibrant process. The color research findings of this project have been published at the AHFE conference, the exploration of product usability has been published in the core Chinese journal "Packaging Engineering," and the research findings related to the core mechanical parts have been presented at the ICRA conference.

Inspiration

The Light Operator Cell Sorting Equipment revolutionizes biomedical research by using optoelectronic dielectrophoresis for precise, damage-free cell sorting. Unlike traditional manual methods, this device enhances accuracy and speed, offering a more reliable and streamlined process for cell selection and culture. Its advanced technology significantly improves laboratory efficiency, empowering researchers to push the boundaries of cell science.
