Chair for Vladimir Zagorac

Bio is a chair collection inspired by universal principals of nature. Stylized organic shapes transform into a characteristic form inspired by the flower of the Calla aethiopica plant on the outer edge of the backrest. Subtle changes in curvature orientation and distortion of the two main outlines, along with asymmetric silhouette of the seat, bring uncompromised ergonomics free of all unnecessary visual details. The organic lines of the seats are emphasized in contrast with the different materials of the legs depending on the purpose of the chair.

Unique Properties

The ambiguous shape of the opening on the seat's back, recognizable as a leaf or shell transforms into a more characteristic form similar to the flower of the Calla aethiopica plant on the edge of the backrest. This edge bends slightly backwards and rises on one side, creating a new visual effect as opposed to the other side. The asymmetry of the silhouette does not affect the functionality and ergonomics of the seat since changes in the shape occur only in the outer areas of the form.

Design Challenge

The shape of the seat can be associated with a multitude of natural forms but also with the general characteristics of the living world. The silhouette of the seat is defined through two edge curves similar in shape but with subtle differences such as curvature, orientation, distortion, and depth. These gradual changes emphasize growth as a universally understandable natural pattern and accentuate the form through minimal spatial deformations associated with gravity and weight. A firm overall construct was kept whilst utilizing asymmetry as one of the main chosen attributes.

Project Duration

The project lasted one semester at the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade.

Operation Flow

Bio is a low armchair collection designed for various usages. It complements modern interiors with simplistic asymmetry and unobtrusive form open to interpretation.

Research

The research was performed by analyzing samples from flora and fauna and simplification and stylizing through drawings and 3D computer models. The result contains no unnecessary visual details, and was driven by the challenge of creating asymmetrical functional aesthetics within an ergonomic fresh design, universally understood as a bio-form. Different variants were developed depending on the purpose of the chair and type of legs, with metal and wood as starting materials. The organic lines of the seats are additionally emphasized in contrast with the materials of the legs.

Inspiration

Bio is a conceptual research project in the subject of stylistics created as a part of doctoral studies. The proposal of the chair collection was inspired by organic shapes and universal principals of nature.
